Posted by Bookstor at 10:27 am, May 13th 2010.

Bookstor is delighted to be supporting the Kinsale Peace Project in welcoming Richard Moore to Kinsale on Monday 17th May, when he will be speaking at the Friary Centre at 8pm. Richard Moore was blinded at the age of ten when he was shot in the face by a British soldier in Derry. He has gone on to work tirelessly to support those caught in conflict and to promote peace, and has won respect and admiration throughout the world. The aim of the Kinsale Peace Project is to promote peace and justice both locally and overseas, and to encourage speakers on the subjects of conflict resolution and human rights to come to Kinsale to share their experiences.

Indiebound
Posted by Bookstor at 10:25 am, May 13th 2010.

Indiebound is a celebration of independent bookshops and vibrant, sustainable local communities. It is a community-oriented movement bringing together booksellers, readers, indie retailers, local business alliances, and anyone with a passionate belief that healthy local economies help communities thrive. Supporting local, independent businesses means that money, jobs, diversity and choices stay local, creating strong, unique communities and happy citizens. The growth of farmers' markets, the Transition Town movement and many other campaigns show how important this is, and we want to connect with these community-aware customers and to other retailers and businesses.

Independent bookshops are increasingly a deestination of choice, growth, and surprise, especially for customers who want to be part of their community. Indies are uniquely placed to find books off the beaten track, recommended by readers with a passion for discovering and sharing truly great reads.

So - why support independents?
When you shop at an independently-owned business, your entire community benefits:
- based on US statistics, €100 spent at a local business means €68 of that stays in your community, as opposed to only €43 if spent at a national company.
- local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbours.
- buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.
- shopping in a local business district helps create a healthy and vibrant high street.
- local retailers are your friends and neighbours - support them and they'll suppport you.
- local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national companies.
- more independents mean more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.

Be part of the story...

A change is as good as a rest...
Posted by Bookstor at 11:20 am, April 15th 2010.

We have been doing a little re-jigging of our shelves and have made way for a new section devoted to classics, so you can now indulge in Emma or tackle Ulysses for about the price of a coffee. We have also pulled together a selection of recommendations for juicy bookclub reads; these include our own suggestions, as well as bookclub titles from TV, radio and other bookclubs. This section will be updated regularly, so it's always worth a peek if you're passing. We have also moved and revamped our poetry, audiobooks and biography sections. (No flies on us.)

Kidzaminer Book Club
Posted by Bookstor at 12:12 pm, November 19th 2009.

The Kidzaminer Children's Book Club is run in conjunction with Bookstor. This month's books are The Thornthwaite Inheritance by Gareth P. Jones, which is a brilliantly twisted tale of skulduggery and menace with killer bees, rampaging bears, unhinged bicycle seats and a chilling secret. The second book is Season of Secrets by Sally Nicholls, which weaves the tale of a heartbroken child and an age-old legend into a haunting story of love, healing and strange magic. Reviews by this month's readers will be featured in the next issue of Kidzaminer, but everyone is invited to get involved in the Book Club by reading either or both of the books, and going to the Kidzaminer website www.kidzaminer.com to let us know what you think of them. Don't forget that Kidzaminer readers get 20% off these books when they present the token from Kidzaminer at the time of purchase.

Thank you so much to all the volunteers who took part in our Terrific Ten Hour Readathon on March 7th. The event was a great success, and despite the rain, the read-aloud sessions attracted a hardy audience who were beguiled and entertained throughout the day.

Congratulations to Labhaoise Barrett who was the lucky winner of the €50 Bookstor Gift Token in our draw. We wish her many happy hours of reading.

The Readathon aimed to celebrate World Book Day, and the joy of reading, as well as to champion our own reading heroes. We received a really enthusiastic response from young and old alike, and there was a lively atmosphere on the day of the event.

Volunteers from Saile, Kinsale Sports and Leisure Project, collected donations at the event and nearly €200 was raised, and generated a very positive response to the project.

Kinsale children were treated to a surprise visit from Danny the Elf at the Storytime Christmas Special at Bookstor on Saturday 6th December. Danny joined in Christmas songs and rhymes and he even read the children a few stories, including Stick Man by Julia Donaldson.

Before Danny left to get back to the North Pole he gave each child a little Christmas Book from his sack of presents!

Aine Ryan and Maxine Acton, the regular storytellers, were delighted to welcome Danny to Storytime. Storytime takes place on the first Saturday of every month at 10am at Bookstor. Stories, songs and rhymes for little ones. Admission free.

Posted by Bookstor at 9:47 am, October 23rd 2008.

"You've never heard of The Tales of Beedle the Bard?" said Ron incredulously. "You're kidding, right?" (From Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows).

The Tales of Beedle the Bard are an exciting addition to the canon of Harry Potter and reveal the wonderful versatility of the author, as she tackles with relish the structure and varying tones of the classic fairytale. There are five tales: 'The Tale of the Three Brothers' which is recounted in Deathly Hallows, 'The Fountain of Fair Fortune', The Warlock's Hairy Heart', 'The Wizard and the Hopping Pot' and 'Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump'. Each has its own magical character and will bring delight, laughter and the thrill of mortal peril. Translated from the original runes by Hermione Granger, the tales are introduced and illustrated by J.K. Rowling. Also included are notes by Professor Albus Dumbledore, which appear by generous permission of the Hogwarts Headmasters' Archive.
