Spain, Las Colinas Golf ResortNovember 2013 - During the Nations Cup competition at Las Colinas Golf & Country Club (7-9 November), the EDGA Executive Committee (EC) was invited by the Spanish Golf Federation to meet and greet a group of youngsters with intellectual impairments during their weekly training session at Lo Romero Golf in Pinar de la Horadada, Alicante, Spain. Tony Bennett, Manon Eggermont and Pieter van Duijn were introduced to the group and its enthusiastic golf professionals by José Félix Bilbao, the committed animator of golf for people with intellectual impairments under the wings of the Spanish Golf Federation. Spain counts an impressive 36 schools throughout the country with more than 700 pupils!

All EC members were very impressed by the spirit, enthusiasm, discipline, concentration of the group, cheerful to achieve what was demonstrated by the professionals and supervisors on the putting green and driving range. After one hour the training session was over and the group departed by bus again, however, not before group pictures were taken, hugs given and handshakes done. The group left in a happy mood, and so did we, very much enriched by this experience!

The next day the General Assembly ratified the “EDGA Vision 2014 and beyond” to become a more inclusive body, open to those with physical, intellectual or sensory impairment. We in EDGA will promote the integration of all Golfers and ground our decisions in the belief that all people wish tob e considered fort heir abilities rather that their impairments.

2013 Nations Cup
Posted by: scoringzone at 18:00, November 28 2013.

The French and the Spanish team won the Nation Cup and Charles Henri Quelin won the individual prize. Richard Saunders had a hole-in-one!

Spain, Las Colinas Golf & Country Club Wednesday 9th November 2013 - The first players arrive at the most beautiful golf resort Las Colinas at the Spanish Costa Blanca near Alicante to play the Nation Cup. A very well-organized tournament with José Felix Bilbao and his team in charge under the supportive wings of the Spanish Golf Federation.

The front doors of the clubhouse are wide open to welcome 17 teams consisting of 68 players from 9 different European countries with their captains and coaches to play the 2013 version of the Nation Cup. Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Italy, France, United Kingdom and Spain are playing for the title.

Every time a new group of players arrived, they got the most warm welcome you can imagine from all the players who were already in the club house. Around sunset everybody was there and all enjoyed a lovely dinner at the clubhouse of Las Colinas. Lots of catching up to do for everybody because over the years this group of players became friends. It is wonderful to see that every new player gets a warm welcome and become a member of the whole group immediately.

On Thursday morning it is time for the practice day. Beautiful weather, 31 degrees, blue sky. The golf course seems to smile at us and invites us to play. After finishing the first practise round of 18 holes it is clear: not an easy golf course but very beautiful and challenging to play. Everybody is discussing the course with each other during the welcome ceremony in the evening, for sure, one thing is clear……..The game is on !

Tensed and motivated faces showed during breakfast on the first day of the championship. Compared to yesterday’s practise round, this Friday is a complete different day, wind….lots of wind today, making the course even harder to play. A real challenge for the players! The starters on the 1st and 10th tee,  announce the name of the players and off they go. By the time everybody is in again, the scoreboard is telling us that the French team is leading in the strokeplay division and team Denmark in the Stableford division.

After a quiet evening all the teams enter the breakfast room on the final day with high hopes; the wind has settled a bit, the clouds are hanging over the golf course and it’s a bit “colder”. The players are ready to start. There is a battle going on between the first 3 teams on the scoreboard; the scores are really close to each other, all players must perform well today and don’t lose points. After a good final round the French were on top of the leaderboard and won the Nation Cup in Strokeplay; the Spanish team won the Nation Cup in Stableford. Charles Henri Quelin from France won the individual prize.

During a great prize giving dinner all the winning teams received a beautiful award; the French team received the Nations Cup out of the hands of Mr. Gonzaga Escauriaza Barreiro, President of the Spanish Golf Federation.

We all congratulate the French team, Spanish team and Charles Henri for their superb performances.

Many thanks indeed to the Spanish Golf Federation, the whole team of José Felix Bilbao, Martin Eastgate and his team of golf resort Las Colinas and everybody else who participated in this great tournament.

Excellent result. Congratulations to
Richard Saunders for his HOLE-IN-ONE
on hole 7 (PW, 133m)!!!
