Move over breathalyzer … here comes the textalyzer
A textalyzer captures taps and swipes to determine if a driver was using their phone while operating a vehicle. It would also be able to tell if the driver was using a phone legally, such as via hands-free technology.

Although it is not yet ready for everyday use, lawmakers in several states are writing or considering legislation to allow law enforcement officers patrolling the highways to connect a device known as a “textalyzer” to a mobile phone to instantly learn if the driver was texting prior to a crash.

EPA plans to revisit Phase 2 GHG rules
The agency said it will initiate a rulemaking process to readdress the trailer and glider kit provisions of those rules.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said this week that it intends to revisit certain provisions of the Phase 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fuel efficiency standards that focus on trailers and glider kits.

How do you teach a driverless truck to fill out a paper log?

That was a question a 20–something passenger asked me as I gave him an Uber ride earlier this year in Portland, OR.

Our conversation started when I pointed out a custom-painted truck next to us. As we crawled in traffic across the Fremont Bridge, I pointed out the Daimler Trucks North America headquarters in the distance, and mentioned they are developing autonomous trucks.

Trailer orders dip a bit but stay robust
Demand is still expected to drop off as the summer wraps up.

While trailer orders declined month-over-month July, according to the latest data, and are expected to keep dropping in August, the year-over-year trend is far stronger – with orders expected to pick back up starting in September.

Research firm FTR Transportation Intelligence said its data indicated final July net trailer orders reached 13,400 units, falling 29% when compared to June’s number.

Canadian truckers await their own ELD mandate
If published as expected, the deadline for compliance with Canada’s ELD mandate would be December of 2019, with those using automatic onboard recording devices (AOBRDs) allowed until 2021 to comply.

Though it has been a long time coming in Canada, an electronic logging device (ELD) mandate similar to the one in the U.S. is poised to be issued by the close of 2017 if all goes as planned.

Will pay some $107 million for the software firm; approximately $87 million in cash along with $20 million in shares.

Descartes Systems Group has acquired MacroPoint, an electronic transportation network providing location-based truck tracking and other services.

Descartes said it will pay some $107 million for MacroPoint, broken down with approximately $87 million in cash and $20 million in shares. The share consideration is subject to a 12 month hold period, with 50% of the share consideration required to be held for at least 18 months. capacity data content, the company said.

There are more than a few questions regarding the federal policies and producers surrounding day-to-day operation of electronic logging devices (ELDs) – especially how the data recorded by those devices will be provided to law enforcement officers and/or safety officials during roadside inspections.

Trump signs executive order to speed infrastructure permitting process
Measure reportedly eliminates Obama-era measure to factor in climate change

President Trump signed an executive order on Aug. 15 aimed at speeding the federal permitting process for transportation and other infrastructure projects.

Speaking at the Trump Tower in New York alongside Transportation secretary Elaine Chao, he said builders have to navigate up to 16 approvals, 9 agencies and 29 statutes. That can result in delays of years or even decades, costing millions of dollars, he said.

The result is a “self-inflicted wound on our country,” Trump said.
